misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | Cyanide hell...: there have been arguments that American shouls be the first to be involved as they are currently the world superpower and thus have the powe and influence to do something. but other countries should take a stance to. ...maybe Australia will if American does. John Howard likes copying Geroge Bush in everything else... |
Diana_a7x Thinking Happy Thoughts Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 456 | ^ I think all of america's allies should help out...do they? |
CyanidexDeath Jazz Hands Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 365 | brokenwings: What if we could get more then one powerful country to take a stand and make an alliance to stop torture? ((thats only if out stupid leaders would join it *ugh*)) |
misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | Diana a7x: i think most have signed geneva but whether they obey it is another thing Cyanide Hell...: then i think that would be a good thing. i think that everyone should have the right to certain basic human rights, such as safety of person/no despicable treatment etc. im not sure how well it could really be enforced though as one of the issues is that it is done not in the open. |
Alx_Aoide Fabulous Killjoy Age: 35 Gender: Female Posts: 113 | ^Most have signed the UN Torture Convention as well and a few countries like England and Spain, have actually acted on it. |
misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | the thing is under this convention different countries are able to define torture in their own way. so like America defined waterboarding and stress positions as not torture and are therefore still allowed to use them [like they have in Abu Graib etc.] under this convention. alos you dont have to sign it. so you can't really make people abide to it. |
CyanidexDeath Jazz Hands Age: - Gender: Female Posts: 365 | ^ Exactly. The US have found ways to still have torture even though they did things with the conventions. The Curent adiministration is very sneeky and kinving, so theres a need for a better sturctured program or alliance |
Diana_a7x Thinking Happy Thoughts Age: 31 Gender: Female Posts: 456 | So would this be similiar to "The Articles of Confederation"?.............very similiar? |
Kaede Bleeding on the Floor Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 1359 | Beeblebrox: I totally agree. I kinda sick of people blaming America for coming in to help countries that have civil war and stuff. |
misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | Kaede: umm Kaede i am a little bit confused with this last comment...would you be able to elaborate for me? |
misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | Diana_a7x: i am not exactly sure about the articles of confederation but the basic jist of Geneva is that countries can sign it if they want to, but there is a clause at the start [i think it may be atricle 3?] that basically states that a state can define torture and use it when it is necessary and when it is consistent with that countries laws. another thing with geneva is that it only applys to POWs and not all members involved in armed conflicts are classified as POWs does that help? |
misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | umm there have been afew questions about these conventions so i just linked them. i hope that helps with your questions... United Nations Convention Against Torture Geneva Convention for the Treatment of POWs |
Kaede Bleeding on the Floor Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 1359 | what we become: Whoops! Sorry everyone, I got confused that the topic was about America helping countries then about torture. Please ignore what I said... Now I feel like such an idiot... |
misa misa. Shotgun Sinner Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 8241 | thats okay it is kinda related as in if we start with one thing how far should we carry the sentiment? what situations should other countries get involved in and when? i am sure no one would counter the intervention in events such as the holocaust but when does it become a big enough thing that other countries shoudl get involved? where do you draw the line? |

If you think about it, America isn't always the most powerful when it comes to peacekeeping, it seems to be one of the countries that stirs up trouble more. But yes, I think the United Nations should come together to speak of the torture done in these counties, but it's not only America's responsibility, considering they also have to handle other global issue's like the recession. But, that's just my opinion. |
