Slash, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello are my top five.
I also have to give honourable mention to Ray Toro, Kurt Cobain and Johnny Ramone. While they aren't as technically or artistically skilled as the first five, they still rock like few others.

in my opinion there is an upper echelon of guitarists noone can touch (Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton) then there is the very very good ones (Dimebag, synyster gates, randy rhodes, tom morello, kirk hammett) but why has noone said John Petrucci, ill say it again JOHN PETRUCCI!!!! he is quite simply amazing at what he does, if you havent heard of him hes in a band called Dream Theatre, check it out.
Also Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforce are out of this world, noone, i say NOONE has guitar duels like those two.
