Cigarettes And Suicide:

Barely any of them do - they might get dumped by their boyfriend, feel down for a few days in a row, and start running around saying, 'Oh I totally have depression, I'm thinking about killing myself.'

just curious, and not making a point you know, but what if that person had actually tried to kill kill themselves, and they kinda swing between being quiet and withdrawn, to be a restless ball of happiness, as soon as you can blink, and once they are like that it can take everything to cheer them up/bring them down a bit. What should I do?
Or am I just fat??

My sister has Bi Polar too. She didn't want to take her medicine either nor did she want to talk to someone. However, whenever she does take her medicine, she's much more calm and not so going off at other people. I know there's diff. types of bipolar though. Some people have it wear they go from angry to happy, others go from depressed to happy, etc.

yep, actualy i was talking to my very good freind an di told him I had been diagnosed and this is what he told me, "so what if some doctor says that u have some bullshit disease.u have a human brain. all bi polar disorder means that if u wanted to fix it, it would just take more effort. but u could do it if u really tried" thoughts?
oh and I go from mega happy to mega depressed in afew seconds. medication is great, only someone stole it from me. but like i couldn't feel any emotion for more then like 5 seconds, i was so calm and mellow, it was refreshing

I'm not sure that you can just say you want to try really hard to not have Bi Polar because bi polar means there's a chemical inbalance in the brain, so I think medicine is what really helps.

Keep in mind that I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to this topic, but isn't impossible to have BPD and Depression at the same time?
And does autism count as a mental disorder?

^ BPD is kinda a form of depression. Another name for it is Manic Depression. It's hard to explain, but it's called that because you might be on a real high for a week, and then go depressed the next. I don't know how to explain it, and that might not be correct, but that's how my mum explained it and she works for Mental Health Australia. So yeah... Smile

Okay I understand that BPD is going from an extreme high to an extreme low, and I've heard the term Manic Depression before, but if you have that wouldn't it be impossible to have 'regular' depression at the same time?
I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore.
I feel like such a minority. I have no mental disorders...

I always assumed that Bi Polar was like "normal" depression, but more... mood swing-y. If that makes sense....
Ha, probably not Tehe

dude, I have Manic depresion, i don't want old fashioned depression too. thats like I get realy awful crippling stomach pains (like Frank, but I have had them my whole life) and then when its my period and I get cramps too, if I have both at the same time, I'm in massive amounts of pain. Manic depression is depression only with mood swings I guess.

Okay understand what Manic Depression is now, but I still think it would be impossible to have Manic and regular depression at the same time. If your already mood-swingy, then how can you...nevermind. I don't think anyone understands my question.

I always kinda wondered how a doctor can make a diagnosis of something that's wrong with your brain that's not obvious like a tumor or a concussion. I bet doctors make tons of misdiagnosis when it comes down to this subject. It's kind of more like an opinion of what's going on in someone's head, because no one can ever be sure of what someone else is thinking.

You can measure the chemicals in a person's brain and compare the levels to average levels of other people the same age and gender.

It's a developmental disorder, which I don't think counts as a mental disorder unless mental retardation would also be counted as such (not comparing the two; I know quite well that they are drastically different).

I believe that most mental disorders are curable. I think that with the help from family, friends and specialist doctors, people can overcome it. I don't know whether we can ever find out what triggers off the disorder, but maybe the person does on a subconcious level.
I dont really have anything else to ellaborate with, but please remember this is just my opinion.

Oh, it's just that in a health class I took they listed autism as a mental disorder.

Just to try and get discussion flowing again, how about we discuss other types of mental disorders?
Here's some other mental disorders:

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as military combat, disasters, . . .or violent personal assaults or accidents. Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a little time. However, some people have stress reactions that do not g o away. . , or get worse over time (PTSD.) PTSD sufferers may relive the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, have difficulty sleeping, and feel detached or estranged, and these symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly impair the person's daily life. (as said by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs)

Dementia, a progressive brain dysfunction, leads to a gradually increasing restriction of daily activities. The most well-known type of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. Dementia not only affects patients, but also those surrounding them, as most patients require care in the long-term.

Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics - the involuntary, rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. Symptoms can sometimes disappear for weeks or months at a time, but usually onset before the age of 18.
