So, what do you think? Do some feminists go too far? How bad is the difference between men's rights and women's rights? What do you think about double standards? Discuss.

Femenism, although noble, is over-blown and becomes a detriment to it's own cause through forcing itself upon society.

I'm a feminist.
I don't really understand the debate, though.
Women don't want to be discriminated against.
We want equal rights.
Of course...

There are those weird oober feminist chicks that think talking to a guy makes you a bad feminist.

Well, while feminisim is a great thing, and society shouldn't always tip twords the men's side, I think some of its just way too extreme.

^druscilla - i agree, feminism is good in the way that they fight for equal rights for women and fem nazi's just hate men and do anything in their power to put men down. I think Fem nazi's are wrong, i don't like their views because they are acting just like men used to, it's very narrow minded and demeaning

feminism is past its use by date in developed countries now
its to the point now where women get jobs over men cause people want to appear not sexist but really i feel that all the problems with sexism are generally past now and i feel that theres no point anymore because women are essentially treated equal

Women are not treated equally to men. Not completely, at least.
Physical standards are still much higher for women than for men.
In order to be "feminine," we must look/dress/act/etc. a particular way, and if we don't, we are deemed less of a woman. We become more man-like.
Women are still paid, on average, less than men for the same work.

With all that said, I do not label myself a feminist. People who I do label as feminists annoy me.
I'm not saying any of this to be preachy about feminist issues. It's just the truth; it's evident in real life.
Feminists & "femi-nazis" often take their beliefs too far, turning every piece of culture and society into a gender-related issue, and that's ridiculous.

Maybe that makes no sense, but that's my view on the topic.

I'm not sure where i stand on this because while i agree that if you do exactly the same job you should get paid exactly the same wage, but a lot of companies do not offer paternaty leave where its law to provide maternity leave - so i kind of understand why they pay the men more, its because the men will be there longer than the women will - this is wholly based on the assumation that women will have children - if the woman does not have children or doesnt want to then by all means same wage, no exceptions!

but then im basically saying that women are worth less because they have children which isn't fair and i dont agree with that, so i guess im on the fence for that one

^Ah, but you kinda have to deal with pregnancy, and men don't have to do that. It's not like pregnancy is effortless.

I believe that women should have equal rights, and that there are still double standards existing.
While I don't like it, I also only agree with feminism to a certain extent.
When feminists start constantly making everything a gender issue, or constantly put men down, is where I stop.
I don't think that gets them anywhere.
If women don't like being opressed and put down, why would men?

yeah i know thats kinda what i meant but the last statement i put there, that i do but i dont understand why men get paid more.

i know pregnancy and childrearing isnt an easy job, i have a friend who's got a 10month old and let me tell you she keeps me on my toes when im just visiting!! lol!

anyway back on topic - i dont think women ever will be equal to men, it's something that has been going on for so long now, people are stuck in their ways

I think that it is right to want equal rights and women almost have equal rights but not quite. I mean recently Luton football club's manager said that the woman who was the assistant referee (or lineswoman) should not have been there as she was incapable of making accurate decisions because she's a woman. That is wrong. You can't have a go at someone just because of their gender. Most people think he just wanted someone to blame for Luton's having lost the game but still its not acceptable. I think though when it comes to hiring women for jobs there is some difference, I think that if you have two equally qualified candidates, one male, one female and a male boss looking to employ, the male will get the job however if the same scenario occurs with a female looking to employ then the woman would be more likely to be hired. Anyway I'm sort of raving on now, thats just what I think anyway.

^I agreeYes
I think that man and women schould be treated, and paid equally. Here (the Netherlands) the average women is paid 7% less than a man with the exact same job, and that just isn`t fair. As I said, we should be treated in the same way, but some things should be taken in consideration: for example, the average man is better in performing hard physical work, and the average women is probably beter in dealing with children.
Nowadays it seems as if compagnies try to employ more women, so they won`t look anti-feminist, but that doesn`t sound right to me eighter. Neutral

I agree.
That's a lot like affirmative action in college/university enrollment (accepting a pre-set number of minorities so as not to seem racist or discriminative).
It isn't fair to non-minority kids who deserve college acceptance, as well, and employing women just because they're women is as bad as employing men because they're men.
If the genders were truly equal, the person who was most qualified for the job (man or woman) would be hired based solely on his/her skills.
This practice is another sign of the remaining inequality between men and women in the modern world. Employers aren't overcoming it; they're simply trying to suppress it. Cover it up.

I think you just proved their point. You say you don't want to be told you're discriminatory and yet you just suggested that all feminists are "self-righteous lesbians." Don't you see how that's a discriminatory act, to label all feminists as fitting that stereotype?

If the genders were truly equal, there wouldn't be a need for affirmative action of any kind. It'd be nice if everyone thought of everyone else on a purely individual basis, and if everyone were treated on an equal playing field. But it is, unfortunately, not so right now. Though I wish it were. :/ For now, though, AA is supposed to help level the playing field.
