Gerard has said that it's about his grandmother, and also about the self-hate that he had at the time, and that's what I've always gotten out of it. It makes sense in the lyrics.

Long ago
Just like the hearse you die to get in again You couldn't wait to die
We are so far from you Your dead and I'm alive. We're to far away

Gerard's Grandma's POV
Burning on just like a match you strike to incinerate
The lives of everyone you know I'm so alive I'm like ash (like being cremated)
Gerards POV
And what's the worst you take (worst you take)
from every heart you break (heart you break)
And like the blade you stain (blade you stain) Gerard selfharmed over his grandmother's death
Well I've been holding on tonight He hasn't been selfharming tonight

Gerards POV
What's the worst that I can say?
Things are better if I stay She'd rather be alive
So long and goodnightGoodbye
So long and goodnightGoodbye

Gerards POV
Came a time
When every star fall brought you to tears again - Everyone who dies brings pain for their family.
We are the very hurt you sold
And what's the worst you take (worst you take)
from every heart you break (heart you break)
And like the blade you stain (blade you stain)
Well I've been holding on tonight

Gerard's Grandmother's POV
What's the worst that I can say?
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight goodbye
So long and goodnight goodbye
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

Gerard's POV
Can you hear me?
Are you near me?
Can we pretend to leave and then
We'll meet again
When both our cars collide?

Just pretend this is goodbye and see you when I die.

Gerard's POV
What's the worst that I can say?
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
So long and goodnight
So long and goodnight

Every MCR fan knows or should know that this song is about Gerard and Mikey Way's Grandmother and that gerard also wrote it because he felt bad he didn't spend alot of time with her befor she died.

This sounds weird but I think the part when they say "Can we pretend and leave again, we'll meet again when both our cars collide" may mean that he hopes that they will see each other again in another life or the afterlife. The cars may symbolize the paths that their lives and deaths take them on.

this song is beautiful. my grandmum got sick about the time the album came out...

it made me realize i didn't spend enough time with her. i've fixed that since then.

gerard really spoke through this song. it tlaks about how he wished he'd spent his time more iwsely, i think, maybe? it's loverly!

My Chemical Asshole:
The ballerina adds loads of effect, I think Smile

this ballerinas name was Tracey Phillipes but she is actuallt a berlesque dancer **in mind**gasp(Gerard!who knew?

(gerard chose her to be the dancer;berlesque means nake bakkerina; GET IT?)
Poor Gerard and Mikey; heres a fact; when they were playing the video while making it the brothers could hardly look at the camera and if anyone noticed the tears in their eyes in the vid[look VERY closely;its hard] they are real.Image

For one thing, it is a tribute to Gerard's late grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, but I think it is the continuation of Demolition Lovers. The man wakes up in purgatory, and seeing that his lover is not with him, he realizes that they have been separated. He then goes insane with grief, or at least, to a state of mind that can only be achieved through enduring immense sadness and sorrow, and/or possbly, anger and rage. The man remembers everything that his lover has done, and the bridge,
Can you hear me?
Are you near me?
Can we pretend to leave and then
We'll meet again
When both our cars collide?

is that he is calling out to his lover, asking if she can hear him.
He is also telling his lover that wherever she is, he will do anything and everything to be with her.

i agree that it is also a continuation of Demolition Lovers, and part of the story on the Revenge album. but what i think is that this is from the woman's point of view, & her lover has been shot & died. you might want to read my other interpretations of Hang 'Em High and It's Not a Fashion Statement, It's a Deathwish in order to understand this completely:

so i think the woman is mourning the death of her lover, & she misses him but thinks it's best if she stayed alive [or is forced to: once again see my other interpretations]. the When both our cars collide i think means something like "until our paths meet" or whatever.

that's what i love about their songs, they have 2 [maybe more] interpretations to their songs: the album concept & their own personal meanings.

The meaning is for his late grandmother Elena
but as kids Mikey and Gerard called her Helena. He contributes this song to her , because she taught Gerard to sing. And he stared in the play Peter Pan. Very Happy
Thank you Elena and rest in peace

i think helena is about their grandmother but i could also go out to all the people you love who have unfortunatley lost their lives, my brother put it to a friend of his who lost his life in a house fire it's really an emotional song and its really good easy listening to have dimmly playing on your ipod when you are trying to get to sleep, it was tragic that she lost her battle with cancer so
!!!!

This a tribute to his dead grandmother.
He missed her funeral and decided he needed to do something.
This song personally saved my life with the line "and like a blade you stain"
Because blades do stain emotionally.
You cut yourself it never goes away.
In a way I think this song is a way of saying hes mad at himself for leaving his Grandmother without saying GoodBye.
