according to frank in the tbp LTD book thing, it says that it was "highly inspired by nerd movies and a haunted ass house in Hollywood" (The Paramour). ...

mostly the haunted house....how the patient kind of gets to the acceptance stage of death and how its a part of life (not something to be grieved about)

at the end, when he starts screaming wake up, i think it's the people who are still alive trying to get him to wake up?....o.O dunno

When Mikey left the Paramour due to depression, Gerard had alot of really terrible nightmares, which inspired this song. He would wake up, and talk about the nightmares into a hand-held recorder thing. Some of the recordings were used in the intro and outro of "Sleep", eg "feels like somebody was gripping my throat"

The begining of the song reminded me of the Butterfly Effect, I have no clue why.

It also reminded me of my grandmother in the hospital fours days before she died. She was very dilusional, at one point I and a few other members of my family were standing at the end of her bed and out of now where she started saying "Woah this ride is getting bumpy, we're going really fast. Aren't we Viny [[my great uncle]]? Viny where are we going? Where are they taking us? But the childeren you have to get the childern!" and we were all like, "What is she talking about."
My point is, to me Sleep was talking about a patient in a hospital that was close to dying, but not quite yet. That was having night terrors, and halusanations(sp?) and someone just saying to him/her just sleep, calm down and sleep.
And just how the pateint feels, they're sorry for them selves, apathy, but aren't ashamed for being so. How it's hard for them to let go of their dreams.
At the same time say to their loved ones "how could you cry for me? I don't feel bad about this, don't cry for me."

I know that's not really what the song is about, but before I knew the actual meaning I created that one for myself.

I thought it was him! I kept listening to that part but i wasn't sure.
I remember hearing somewhere that around the time they went to the haunted house, he had the feeling of strangulation for a while.
Wow, thats for clearing that up.

I always thought what Gerard was saying at the start, was from an interview I got off of iTunes "My Chemical Romance Welcomes You to the Black Parade".
But after reading that and going off to listen to it, he mentions the night terrors but doesn't actually say what he says in the song.
He also mentions the song has a lot to do with fear, so I'd say the song is very much about those night terrors.

actually, i think it sounds more like frank, the way he says "um" and the general tone, his accent, its a lot deeper than gerard, cos gerard has more a new york twang.

do you know for sure it was mikey that left?

i love the song though, something about it is so...like, getting at you if you know what i mean...i think its one of the harshest songs on the album

^ everyone on this thread that said anything like that is right.
It was mentioned in the four page interview thingy in this month's AP.
it's Gerard in the beginning.

but...I have no clue about what the song is about exactly.
and what I do think I can't explain. Lol...I just got an idea from the article.

Here the Patient seems to be both unwilling to forgive and unwilling to accept forgiveness. He acknowledges his state of illness, and all the terrible things he's done ("a drink for the horror that I'm in, for the good guys and the bad guys, for the monsters that I've been"Wink. He reflects on some of these things, such as benefiting at the dispense of others ("some say now suffer all the children and walk away a savior"Wink. However, he insists that "there ain't no way that I'm sorry for what I did". He asks his lover "how could you cry for me, cause I don't feel bad about it", wondering how she can forgive some of his sins when he hasn't even done so. He also realizes that he may have let too many people control his actions over the course of his life ("three cheers for tyranny"Wink. This line could also suggest that the Patient himself has controlled other people, as it follows "the monsters that I've been." Finally he tells his lover to "shut your eyes, kiss me goodbye, and sleep, just sleep", telling her that the "hardest part is letting go of your dreams." This signifies that the Patient wants his lover to let go of everything he's done, stop asking for forgiveness, and just accept the person that he is. The Patient is giving up on life and any attempt of repentence, and feels that he should just toss in the towel and die.

I think this is about someone whos done something wrong, and everyone feels sorry for them because there in such trouble, but they dont care, because they will never be sorry for doing it.

I think it's about a person who was either viewed as a superhero, or hated by the millions.
He's had some problems, and now people are crying for him.
He feels as though he's done some bad stuff, and tells people that he doesn't feel bad about it...so, why should they?
And I also think that since he is "never coming back again", he doesn't care if he's abusing power[tyranny] or doing bad things.
He's telling people to calm down and sleep.
That's everything is alright.

"They say now suffer all the children"
There is a guy, that is seen as a savior by all the children, but by the adults is seen as a mind breaker and a monster for the children.
"Don't breath for me"
That how the children worship him so much
"How could you cry for me"
That how the childen cry
"for the monsters that I've been"
he never new until now what the adults thought of him
and he says in a sarcastic way how his been a monster
"Cos there ain't no way that I'm sorry for what I did"
Cuze he feels and what all the children tell him is that he saved him so he says to the adults how he thinks he did right

and all the parts about his nightmares are what he tells the children about.

I've to join mcrfreak21: that's a thoughtful interpretation, KissTheBride Smartass

I don't know, but it's not that unlikely that the patient could be a singer of a rock band himself who is considered as an idol and a "savior" by his young fans or a wasted "madman" or a threat to the youth by others (probably parts of the adult world).
