I think it's about how substance abuse destroys you and the ones you love. This is like one of the few songs I lreally like off "The Black Parade", sounds like old MCR.

I think it's going along with MCR's original message:
Save Yourself.
So it's about how drugs are going to totally screw up your life
"The Sharpest Lives Are The Deadliest To Live."
The SHARPEST lives is referring to a drug injection

I think it's about during the time when Gerard wasn't sober. He lost someone and just killed the pain with drugs. And now he feels guilty. It may not be. Matters who wrote the song. Because Ray does most of the writing.

this song is about the patient using drugs ans substances to deal with his current state (dieing).he uses the drugs to deal with his impending death and has created a mask to hide behind
"If it looks like I'm laughing I'm really just asking to leave"
he has become repulsive to those arouond him and though he needs his lover she cannot stand being around him while he is doin this to himself.
"You're the one that I need, I'm the one that you loathe.
You can watch me corrode like a beast in repose,
Cause I love all the poison, away with the boys in the band
I've really been on a bender and it shows,
So why don't you blow me a kiss before she goes?"
the first lines in the chorus refer to him getting another "hit" to releve him of his worries
"Give me a shot to remember,
And you can take all the pain away from me.
he now talks unlogically about burning empires and the sun being ashamed to rise in his presence which to me says he is on some sort of high where he feels invinceble. he doesnt sleep either as a result of this high
"In love with all of these vampires,"
he is also preparing for his lover to leave him but she hasnt yet evn tho she is disgusted by him.
:"So you can leave like the sane abandoned me"

This song is absolutlie wonderfull! "Give me a shot to remember" It's gotta be about drugs. I love the start tho: Now come on come all to this tragic affair, wipe of that make up- what in it's dispair?" It's a bit early in the morning and I'm not english. So there might be a few misstakes in here XD

I read in a blender magazine which had My chemical Romance on the cover, says the song was written about Gerard's alcohol and drug past. Indicating that partying and doing drugs are the "deadiest lives to lead" which after gerard had sober up ended his friendship with bert because bert still does that stuff and gerard is keeping away from that.

This may sound kind of "literiture geekish" but I love how The Sharpest Lives mentions Romeo and Juliet. I love that play. It's like the ultumate tragedy. Razz

I think in the beginning he's saying how much he hates spending a night by himself.

And by 'I love all the poisen away w/ the boys in the band' he's saying he's in a band, and so he calls them up and they decide to go out.

And I'm thinking they went to a strip club, for the simple fact that he says he loves ALL the poisen. Now, a lot of old peaple say that stripping/porn is poisening our society, and obveosly drugs & alcoholl is poisen too, so they went somewhere that you can find it all in one place.

And at this strip club he finds a girl. Said girl wants to go to his place and have sex and he's already drunk and probably horny so all she has to do is kiss him and she gets her way.

And I also think 'Why dont you blow me?' and 'A kiss before she goes' are two seprate sentances.the first one means he wants a blowjob (duhh) and the second one is more of a sugestion. He's basically saying "I'll probably never see you agin, so before you leave i want one last kiss"

And then I think they do see each other agin and they become sex partners and thats were the 'Romio and Juliet' part comes in, saying how they need to take a break from all that and take the time to start a relationship or they might regret it later.

But they dont stop, and thats were the rest of the song comes in.

Or, at least, thats what it sounds like to me.

If you put earphones on while listening to this you can hear either Frank or Ray whispering in each ear at the beginning when Gerard is saying

Pretty good interpretation on it. But I find it hard to believe that this is a song connected to the Patient. I mean. Look at Mama. That has been said to be confirmed about a WWI soldier writing to his mom. And is obviously suffering from PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

EDIT: americanidiot. Take a look at the lyrics sheet that's attached to the album art. "Would you blow me a kiss before she goes?" is one sentence. Just clarifying. Just don't want it to be read as an insult.

No offense, but I highly doubt they went to a strip club. They have way too much respect for women.

I ADORE this song!!!!!! And, I love the but about Romeo and Juliet, as you can tell from my siggy. I never really thought about the song being about drugs, but I guess it makes sense... I always thought that it was just sbout how difficult it is to lead a good life and how hard it is to make a name for yourself. Lyrics that justify this:

"You're the one that I need; I'm the one that you loathe."- talking about how hard it is to find good help

"A light to burn qall the empires"- how huge "empires" of people are trying to take over the world and make it "monotonous"

"So you can leave like the sane abandoned me"- how everyone always leaves you on your own at one point or another.

Well, that's just my opinion....
