Why do people get eating disorders?
I know that some people develop eating disorders because of stress and wanting to take control of something, something that will have a positive outcome. At the time it's like, 'If I do this, I'll loose a little bit of weight and I'll be fine and everything will be better because I'll be skinnier and it was MY desicion.' But then it spirals out of control.
also, flat out low self confidence is a big part of it. especially, i think, if the person was bullied or ever called fat.
I had an eating disorder a couple of years back...
But i didn't intentionally get it.

I just started to lose me appetite all together and lost a lot of weight, I know it sounds weird...but sometimes it's unintentional. I eventually became better and gained my appetite after many visits to the doctor.

I am in the hospital right now being treated for anorexia. It's tough, physically and mentally. Really, I wonder why I ever did this to myself, why I strived to be so unhealthy. It just lead me to thos hell and therapy...it's awful.

then in my eyes? that is not an eating disorder.
to me you had a medical problem that needed to be addressed, and you couldn't eat, therefore it was a medical issue, not an eating disoder.
to me an eating disorder is when you intentionally do not eat because you want to be thin, you want to look 100 lbs., you hate the way you look and will do ANYTHING to be this frail, thin looking boy or girl
that in my eyes is an eating disorder.

I wish schools tought about eating disorders just as much as STD's.
Last term, we had five lessons on how oral sex is just as dangerous as regular sexual intercourse, but I've never once in my life learned about eating disorders.

I agree with you, they dont teach enough about it. Eating disorders were apart of the nutrition unit at my school. I didnt like the way they taught it. They made it seem as if everybody starts an eating disorder because they think their fat. Then we watched a video the next day and were finished with it. Its a bit more important than sex, because thats going to happen anyway. Eating disorders are something that should be taught so its avoided.

I agree with both of you, not that I would actually know, because I'm homeschooled, but my sister was too, and she's basically a mild anorexic, but she has a normal mental picture of herself, and I had thought that eating disorders were basically a mental disease. I'd thought that the person thinks they're like, a bajillion pounds and all, when they're actually a normal weight.

People suffering from eating disorders don't want to look 'frail'. They just want to be thin, which is totally different. These people suffer from a mental disorder in which they honestly, truly believe that they are fat. Obese. Grossly overweight. Even when they're down to 100lbs and there are bones sticking out, and the rest of the world can see it, they look in the mirror and see rolls of flesh sticking out over the tops of their jeans, pudgy upper arms, a double chin, etc. They honestly do not see that they are dangerously thin - they're convinced they're huge, and that's why they continue to starve themselves.
So yes, while you're right that people who suffer from bulimia and anorexia 'hate the way they look', you're wrong about them wanting to look 'frail' or dangerously thin. They honestly cannot see how skinny they get, and I speak from experience. Even down to 50kgs (which on my frame is ridiculously thin), every time I looked in the mirror or at photos of myself, all I could see was a chubby girl with a double chin and a muffin-top staring back at me. It was horrible.

But as soon as I stop breastfeeding I'll be back on the merry-go-round... And I'm not ashamed of that fact. I really, truly hate the way my body is and I won't be happy until I'm back to where I was.

Why do people get eating disorders?
When they are seriously unhappy with themselves and their lifeand/or style. Or when they feel like they have no control over anything in their lives, especially if theyve hit a rough patch, eg parents splitting up, and they got shoved in a box like the rest of their belongings and get regarded to as it. that is when they feel the only thing they can control is how they eat, or not eat as the case may be.
Plain boredom can also lead to overfeeding, but not usually anorexia/bulimia believe it or not.
Bullying also plays a major part in this. Calling people fat makes them desperately try and lose weight, especially if they are in say, high school, where most bullying happens. People start to believe this.
Calling people anorexic effects them in the opposite way, they feel they need to eat more and more to be reach "normal". But what the hell is "normal"? Magazines promote it, so called "idols" promote it... its everywhere. In every single teenagers magazine, page after page of airbrushed models are flaunted, and teenager's eyes widen, and they get it in their heads that this is normal, because they see it everyday, everywhere they turn.

How do we help people with eating disorders?
We could send them to a specialist, try having a chat with them, or talk to their parents about it (although the latter isnt always the best choice, especially if they are your friend, because although you mean well, it might not always be seen that way). Try and help them accept themselves for who they are. Explain to them that they are not going to morph into who they want to be just by starving/overfeeding themselves, they will still be the same inside. The inside is what counts, not the outside.
Point out things you don't like about yourself and others around you. They may see you as perfect, and if you point out horrible things about yourself, as embarassing and or horrible as it may be, it can sometimes help a great deal.

What do you think is a good way to lose weight?

first you need a healthy mindset where you think your worth the work it takes to lose the weight.
Do you think it's bad for young kids to go on diets?

not if it's going to improve their health. kids have arteries too that can be blocked and fat cells that can grow to dangerous levels
Why do people get eating disorders?

they feel like it is something they can control, thinness is an attainable goal so they reach for it however they can. it's a blood thirsty competition
How do we help people with eating disorders?

find a way to let them know they are worth more than their weight or lack there of

To be honest, I don't think there is a singular reason that people develop eating disorders. It's all a mix of peer pressure, family pressure, the media, low self-confidence and low self-esteem, bullying, etc. Personally, I guess there's a one main reason to each person why they became anorexic/bulimic.

Why do people get Eating Disorders?

I know that abuse can effect if people develop an eating disorder. If a girl has been raped or sexually abused, they can use this illness as a way of stopping themselves from developing & growing up. By being thin, skinny & child-like they think they can avoid growing up & becoming attractive to men, who they feel may abuse them sexually or harm them.

I think it is bad for young children to go on diets because first they abstain theirselves from their fave food, and so when they're loosing weight, and all of a sudden get really hungry, they go crazy and eat everything they can, and they gain their weight

Everything you eat is a diet.

However, it is highly encouraged that parents get their children eating healthy from the time they are an infant.

If a child's favorite food is double chocolate cake, and they eat a slice of it often, it is not a bad thing for them to cut back on that.

On the subject of eating disorders... it's obviously an incredibly sad thing. Being in high school, I see first hand the double standard put on girls (no, I am not simply saying there is body image pressure put on girls, but in my lifetime, I have not seen it as badly with males). If a girl is a healthy weight, she is often mocked for being too fat. If a girl is slightly underweight, people assume she either has an eating disorder or uses drugs which make her lose weight.
Of course, there are a few exceptions, but often times young girls feel as though they cannot find a happy medium.

Yara; wtf...:

Why do people get eating disorders?

If we knew this, there would most likely be a cure and a way to prevent it.

You mean by just shoving food down to people who refuse to eat?

Huh?

That makes no sense with the posts anyone has made.

If we knew for a fact what causes eating disorders, they could be treated easier.
How does that imply force feeding?

that is just ignorant.
why do you think half of the anorexics (especially male ones) refuse to come out and say anything? comments like that bring on low self-esteem.
one time i was reading Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, and there was a story written by an anorexic girl -- her father found out and made the girl sit in front of him and didn't allow her to move until she ate the steak in front of her.
how does the kid learn? is that really getting to the root of the issue the kid has as to WHY he or she decided to starve his or herself to begin with?
it doesn't, it makes the kid feel worse then he or she feels to begin with; it is an excuse for your kid to eat without finding out why the kid tried starve his or herself in the beginning.
or it is just an ignorant way for the parent to react.

i actually tried to stop eating awhile back. the reason was because of everyone around me. my dad used to call me a fat pig and my aunt and uncles always made snide comments. that just lowered my self esteem to the point where i couldn't take it anymore. i stopped eating for a while. if i did eat i would eat less than 400 cals a day. i just wanted to look good and be like that girl in the magazine.
but now i eat better and feel somewhat kay about myslef, i eat more and eat healthy.
eating disorders are caused by low-self esteem and wanting to be the "it" girl - skinny, pretty, and adored.

Only now people should be seeing that the "it" girls look disgusting.
They're all in dire need of some nourishment, and yet girls still want to be like them.

What do you think is a good way to lose weight?
Healthy diet and regular exercise, I have yet to hear a better way.

Do you think it's bad for young kids to go on diets?
Yes, children and teenagers need a wide range of food [vitamins, minerals, ect.]. Most diets tell you to stop eating certain foods which growing/developing bodies need.

Why do people get eating disorders?
Because they are unhappy with themselves, either physically or mentally. They want to look great, and most people associate looking good with being thin. The only problem is, a lot of people aren't correctly informed about how to go about losing weight, or they take it too far. To the point where it becomes an obsession.

How do we help people with eating disorders?
Make them realise that they are beautiful. Tell them that they are gorgeous not only on the outside but on the inside too. Have them be happy with their body, as long as it isn't unhealthy.
