I've always been against prostitution because it's a shameful occupation and it's a form of disrespecting your body.

But my mom said that I really shouldn't mind it because all those girls had different life stories and that could have driven them into prostitution.

In amsterdam they've legalized prostitution and its working out great for them. Less disease and well the government can tax it so less taxes on the general public. They can control the situation unlike where its illegal and there are prostitute murders and everything's berserks.

I think it's disgusting that the goverment gives these women no choice but to sell themselves. I mean, the women that do it just for drug money should be locked away, yeah for sure, but the women that do it to try and raise their child comfortably, they should be given a second chance at a worthwile career. One where you're not in danger of getting AIDS or killed even.

^How exactly can they get a "second chance" for a worhtwile job, I wonder?

The women on the streets are there for a reason.
They can make enough to survive, but only barely.

To get a job, you have to have money.
To get money, you have to have a job.
It's like a person in a wheelchair trying to get it up the stairs alone,
without aid from machinery, a ramp, an elevator, and facing the inability to walk.
Usually, it is almost impossible.

I think if they are happy and enjoy their job then that is great. If they hate it and are only doing it becuase they need to feed their children than I think there should be somewhere for them to go to get assistance in finding a different occupation.

Just a quick question here...
Can prostitution be a form of self-harm?

^Yes and no.
I would say that promiscuous unprotected sex, to divert from real problems, could be self harm,
or that drug usage oftern associated with prostitution can be self harm,
but not just the act of selling sex.

Honestly, I blame prostitution on the economy.
Yes, I think prostitution is horrible, don't get me wrong. But think about it, why would anyone ever go to the limits of selling their bodies to some guy off the street if they didn't have to?
Although, there probably are some prostitutes out there that are in it for drugs, alchohol, or simply the fact that they're having sex.

I am half and half on the topic. I think it's a bit odd for one to willingly have sex for money, but that's just me. My main concerns are how the men and women are going to be protected (there are so many people that prostitute themselves and get murdered or raped) and the STD's, as some people prefer to have sex without condoms. Why they do, is beyond me...

I think prostitution should be legalised.
But, when it is done so, for the brothels and businesses to be set up accordingly and more professionally.
So it becomes more than just some "sex from a whore" - though I understand many people will always maintain that view.
It needs to be set up in a way to take care of the women, emotionally, and especially physically, in terms of hygiene, etc.

Ruby [thats your name, right?]
I just want to tell you that before I read this thread, I thought "ofcourse prostitution shouldnt be legalized" because I didnt understand it, and ofcourse since society marks it as bad, I thought so too.
But what you said totally shifted my view.
I'd just like to sum it up and say you're really intellegent.

And besides the point, heres something that will blow your mind away. Anyone know To Write Love On Her Arms? Anyways, some of the people working there went on a trip to India to help some of the prostitutes there. Heres some parts of what he said:

"Yesterday we spent the afternoon with a group of 30 girls, at a center an hour from where we're staying... The girls have been rescued from slavery, mostly sex trade. Oldest was 17. Youngest was 8. There was a nine year-old with a baby. There are a couple girls with physical ailments from having sex before their bodies could handle it - one girl couldn't walk. "

"We visited a shelter there run by Apne Aap, the org we're working with. Shelter is surrounded by brothels. 10 little girls live there as either their mothers are prostitutes or dead... There are 700-800 prostitutes in this one neighborhood which is approx 1 square mile. We were told there are 20,000 prostitutes working in "city center".

"It was heavy beyond words. i wanted to cry, scream, fight... one of the little girls, her mom was working as a prostitute literally in front of the shelter. i was saying goodbye to the little girl and noticed this woman (a prostitute) looking our way and, after we left, someone told me that she was the girl's mother."

and heres what a guy who went with him said. His name is caleb, I think:
[sorry about the bad grammer, thats how he typed it]

"tonight me and about 11 others had the oppurtunity to visit the red light district in the neighborhood of the Apne Aap center. stephen from anberlin and i walked to the paint store yesterday, and walked right past the area without ever even knowing that it was that close to where we were.

there are girls lined up on both sides of the street standing still, waiting for men to approach them. when you first see them you automatically know that they are sex slaves, first because they are standing still( no one ever seems to stand still in this city) and second because they are dressed up and wearing alot of make-up.

some women when they would see that you were white, would cover their faces so that you couldn’t tell what they looked like. most girls are afraid of anyone knowing their identity. the leaders from the Apne Aap center took us to their headquarters right in the middle of the district, where they house and feed the children of the slaves while they work at night.

after some time, watching the street and seeing how the locals reacted to us, the leaders felt that it would be safe for us to walk through the district. one of the men who works for Apne Aap led us through the L shaped district that spans about 2 to three blocks. the locals were curious, as they always are that we were there.

but i could tell that the girls felt nervous that we were there and seeing them. most would not look at you, some would look at you but with a very anxious look.

with 100 rupees, i could of bought time with 5 girls that night. that’s 20 rupees a girl. for 50 cents, i could of been just another man to make a girl, who has known so much pain in her life, more painful.

50 cents."

It just made my heart stop. What do you think about this?

Aye Noam, I am Ruby.

That article, sadly, is usually the standard in child prostitution, rather than the exception.
I've read various other articles before, in magazines or online,
about the child sex trade.
There are girls who are forced to undergo repeated hymenoplaty surgery
(surgery to fix a small piece of skin into the vagina, to make her appear as a virgin)
because men will pay more for a virgin than they will for someone who's been previously used.

It is sad, it is heartbreaking, and it is wrong.
It's forced rape, and sexual enslavement.
I in no way agree to this kind of prostitution, be the person enslaved a child or otherwise.
I also believe that should prostitution ever be legal, there should be a minimum age,
preferably 18, though I would be happy if no one under the age of 16 was allowed to enter that profession.

Noam - It's paid for by the owners of the slave,
though often, the owners have a deal with the doctors to pay in whatever
way best suits the situation.
Meaning, it can be paid for through time with another slave.

India - The problem is, that once you get in, it is extremely difficult to get out.
Especially today.
If you go looking for a job in between jobs,
who's going to hire a whore?

Plus there's the pimps, and often the prostitiutes are so far
in debt with their pimps, it is not a plausible thing that they could ever earn
enough to pay them back, especially if the pimps add interest.

you say that there has to be a safer and better way to make money.
and if they dont have money in the first place to start off then how are they supposed to get a better job?
Some of the young girls that get into the escort and prostitution areas come from bad home structures and third world countries.
do you think they want to sell their bodies to the public?
maybe these girls or boys that work in prostitution have little kids like siblings to take care of.
not everyone can start off in a well paid job becuase you need money for that.
you keep saying that they should get abetter and safer job like as if its that easy.
like as if you could go to your letterbox and pick one right out like a letter.
not everyone can have a great life like we do with a stable lifestyle and constant shelter
legal or not
being a prostitute is very risky business.
and the prostitutes that are out there know the risks of getting an STI or Aids.
Not that i want to see young girls and boys have to be caught by the police, and i dont want to take away the only way they can provide for them and who ever thy have to take care of
i dont knwo whether it would be a good idea to legalize it
i havent made up my mind on that part yet

I think it should be legal.
I think if you can give sex away you have every right to sell it.

I personally won't ever higher a prostitute out of my own safety.

I personally won't become a prostitute

But I think if a man or woman wants to be a prostitute they should be allowed to

Some people do it just to get by (as in that is there income) and they have families to support, and that would be there job of choice.

Besides they can pass laws outlawing prostitution, but it will still happen (like the prohibition)

But I think if they did outlaw prostitution they would also have to outlaw Porno's and Strip Bars. Because its "demeaning to women".

In some places prostitution is legal, though the government isn't
taking the interest or control of it they should under those circumstances.
