Legal or not, prostitution is always going to carry a certain brand with it. It has always been a shameful profession, and it always will be, no matter what type of laws or regulations would be created.

But then again, prostitution has always been here. Ever since the ancient Rome, there have been women who sleep with men for money or other goods. What can we do today to change that, to wipe it completely off the radar and live in a happy, prostitution-free world? I say not much, no matter how hard we try.

Although basically it's every woman's own choice what they do with their bodies and who to sleep with, too many criminal activities surround the profession to ever get rid of all of them. Pimps forcing young (often foreign) girls into the scene, promising them a better life they're never going to see. Drugs to numb the emotional pain. STD's, obviously, though there's nothing criminal about them. Legalising prostitution wouldn't wipe them away.

Agreed. Making prostitution illegal wouldnt stop any of the problems that run through it. Nothing will ever stop those problems.

I think it might give some women a feeling of empowerment.
Like stripping.
My mother used to be a stripper. She wasn't trashy, she didn't sleep with her customers, didn't do drugs, was raising a kid, had other options, etc.
She felt empowered by stripping.
So if that's your reasoning, I see no problem with it.

I think that it's considered a shameful profession, because sex has always been a tainted subject. It's always been something that happens behind closed doors, something that should only happen with someone you "love." Prostitution isn't shameful just like sex isn't shameful. It's only shameful if you allow it to be.
A woman or man who needs the money, they're going to do anything to get it. Whether for drugs or food. And you can't judge someone for that. Even if they're a druggie.
And yea, I can see where the empowerment would come into play, but I don't think a 17 year old girl wakes up one morning and says, "Gee, I wanna be a powerful woman, I want to make my own choices. I'm going to sell my body." Prostitution happens because a lot of the time, there is no choice.
If I needed to feed my child, hell yea, I'd do anything I needed to do. If I was a coke addict, as bad as it sounds, and I needed my next fix, you know where I'd be. That's where we'd all be. Sometimes, it happens. Sometimes, there is no choice.
The legal system has never been able to control it, like drugs, it's always going to be there. Yea, the results are...unpleasant. But so are the results of many things.
It's just something that happens.

I really think you shouldn't sell yourself.
That's just wrong.

As long as the woman is safe - in good burlesque houses I've heard of stuff like regular rooms being used, with security guys on the doors, and of course contraception. But one wonders - why do men go for it, it's not impossible to get a girlfriend/boyfriend, and have the love that goes with the sexual relationship without having to pay good money for it. I mean some of these guys are married or in a relationship where they regularly engage in sexual intercourse. The mind boggles.

Do you think prostitution should be legal?
Yes....It should be legal...as long as the 'escort' is being careful, using protection and stuff then it should be aloud in my opinion...being an 'escort' is just another job...why not use ur sexual abilities to your advantage...I have a lot of respect for 'escorts' because they go through a lot at the end of the day some of them are abussed and catch STI's.
aybe to make the 'escorts' safer they should have a body guard or something to keep them safe...

Um, I've never really put much thought into it but I'm against it because i see no way it would help control it.

I think it should be legal. If a man or woman who is eighteen or older wants to be a sex worker, I think they should have the right to. Obviously I think child prostitution is wrong, and I think that everything surrounding the sex work industry as it is in America and many other countries now is sketchy at best or downright wrong--murders, drug sale, abuse, rape, and so on. But if it's a consenting adult in safe conditions who gets regular checkups and has to use protection as a condition of the job--which are all things that would probably be enforced if sex work were legalized--I don't see a problem with it.

You might say it's degrading--so don't be involved on either end.

You might say it's repulsive or wrong--same answer.

Honestly I'm sure there are people out there who wouldn't mind being sex workers or even would like it as a job. Obviously there will always be a social stigma attatched to it, but if you want to do it then you're probably willing to deal with it.

Also, I've noticed that a lot of the people talking about getting a "regular job" instead of sex work and how it's not that hard aren't even of working age.

it's about time that it is fucking legalized! i mean, wouldn't that would make it safer and it would also protect the prostitutes so it won't be that bad. and whether we like it or not, there would still be prostitutes and all.

Sick people. Prostitution is selling your body, purity, and consciousness away. It's a terrible thing. Should it be legal, hell no! Sex is just a horny fix anymore - or a feel-good fix, whatever. Prostitution has just degraded sex from the precious thing it used to be. Now 12-year-olds are having unprotected sex and getting pregnant. That'd turn out to be a 24-year-old mother with a 12-year-old child. Sorry, it's in the wrong thread, but premarital sex is the same as prostitution, but in prostitution, you can cheat on your spouse. Lovely, ain't it?

That makes absolutely no sense.

Prostitution has been around as long as people have; it's not a new development. Saying prostitution causes promiscuity among children is a logical non-sequiter anyway, that's like saying rap music causes gang violence.

I don't even know where you're getting the idea that pre-marital sex and prostitution are the same thing. If you love someone there's nothing wrong with having sex with them, whether or not the church/government has declared you married or not. I mean obviously there's a problem with twelve year olds having sex but that's a separate issue entirely.

Not everyone on the customer end of the prostitution industry is married. I'm sure many are but that's their issue.

Personally I wouldn't care to be a sex worker nor to be a customer to one, but to each his own. Who are you and I to tell others what they should and shouldn't be allowed to do in their sex life?

Um..since when was sex beautiful or means anything. The reason we have sex is for pleasure and reproduction. Kissing was invented to show your feelings for your lover. Sex came with us for other reasons.

Prostitution keeps poor women alive. It's worth all of it's downpoints

whatever a woman wants for a job. its gross, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do.

i think it should be legal, just so its safer for the woman. the woman gets beat and sometimes killed right after. it should be legal. i still think its disgusting how the sell their bodies, but it should be legal.

They think so too. Seen many interviews with prostitutes.

Here are MY terms for prostitution

It should be government watched. To become a prostitute, the woman or man must register as one so they can be tracked if they go missing.

The woman must fo for a manditory STD check every month.

Each prostitute must carry ID, and if caught on the job without it, she should be able to be arrested.

If the registered does not show up for her manditory checkup, the government should be expected to check local police records for recent murders/kiddnaps/etc

^ thats what really shoud've happened in the first place.

its should've always been legal (prostitution has been going on for thosands of years, mind you) and woman should've always have been protected.

prostitution will be going on legal or not (ever been to Waikiki?i saw a hooker wearing a leather outfit covered in bruises there. and she wasnt the only one either. not just Waikiki, they're everywhere) so why doesnt the government just keep a eye on these girls and give em checkups? its easier, better, and its gonna help prevent some STDS.

Legalizing it or illegalizing it isn't going to change anything
In England it is illegal to buy alcohol under the age 18, but people still do it. In England its illegal to have sex under the age of 16.. kids still do it. So ilegalizing it wont make a difference.
I think it is pretty unnecessary to sell your body like that. If you are forced into it then its a different story.

Well, I'm for it, but I'm not for it.

Someone shouldn't have to sell their body for money,it's just a horrible way to live. But legalizing it could definately help. People could make sure they don't get infected and they could check the customer for I dunno, drugs and weapons.

But it's really hard to say...

And btw, here in Winnipeg, our phonebook has a section called Escorts.. which actually means "legal" prostitutes.
