I think it should be illegal, 'cause like, why are women selling themselves to people?. It's so degrading. it's not the proper way of making a living. Women prostitutes are just doing it to make money..but it's not the best way, i agree.

Prostitution is another career. You can do it for money. To me, if you do it, but you pay taxes with your money you make from it, and your a good citizen, you don't do drugs or anything, I have nothing against it

vichy:
its sad when prositiution is the best way to get money, but is it really worth the sacrifices you have to make for yourself.
When prositiution is the only way out for a women, i dont think she truley values her body and realises its something to be treasured.

When a person is starving, or someone they love,
like a child or a parent, a sibling, etc, is starving, or needs costly medical
treatment, there are more important things to them than taking the time
to value their bodies.

Considering the huge image issues a large chunk of the female population
have, most of them are not valuing or treasuring their bodies either.

And personally, being a prostitute is better than starving to death,
or letting someone I love die because I can't swallow my pride to
do the only thing to help them I can.

You can't value your body if you starve to death, and pride means nothing when you die.

I'm not for prostitution.

I know some people are saying, "Women don't think of their own health when their families are sick/starving/etc."
But come on. You could get a regular job if you're that desperate.
The only thing prostitution does is let other women think it's okay to sell yourself for money.

Some women would rather keep their pride.

Excuse me, but do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a "regular" job?
You not only need a resume and references, but you need to look the part,
you need to be able to be contacted for information on the job, and you need
the education and skills to do the job.

A "whore" can hardly walk into a place of business and ask for a job.
She/he'd be thrown out into the streets faster than they can say please.

I am a perfectly qualified high school graduate.
It took me a year to find a job, and that is after a professional
helped me with my resume, and I papered my city with it.

Given the chance, a very large portion of prostitutes would have
a normal job. It isn't by choice, what they do. It is by necessity.

I read a story of a mother who became a prostitue. She had a disabled son, whose equipment wasn't cheap. She had a job, but that wasn't enough to keep them both alive and buy his eqipment, so she worked the streets simply because she had to.

If the government took note of cases like these, they could grind down to the root of why people become prostitutes, and give them the right help. But all the government does now is complain that it's dangerous for women to to be prostitutes, yet they do nothing to help.

I don't see anything wrong with the act of prostitution itself. it's just all the things that come with it in certain situations that makes it a negative thing...Really if it were just women by their choice and their choice alone selling sex for cash, I see nothing wrong with that. Supporting drug habits and or pimps, or having no where else to turn but that is what I don't agree with...But maybe if it was legal everywhere some of those problems would be eradicated

I look at that question on this way:

If its legalization will prevent selling women into slavery, I'm for it.

If it will stop the spreading of sex-disseses, I'm for it.

But, it won't, because that's not the way that world works. Pimps will still continue to recruit young girls, they will continue beating the crap out of the other girl if they haven't made enough money. They will still be mistreated and abused if not murdered.

I'm against it. There are numerous escort agencies, that are the cover for prostitution and the government isn't doing much to stop it. They keep looking the other way.

So, I partially blame them for the fact that it's spreading faster than ever.

When it comes to pimps beating the crap out of a poor woman, they spend the night or two in prison and then they're free to beat her again. Or they'll just bail themselves out.

It isn't fair that someone is making huge amounts of money on someone else's suffering, because that's what it is...I've never met anyone who is willing to sell their body for kicks and enjoys it.

i think it is morally wrong but i understand that in the u.s. it is illegal but i also understand that some men or women do it because they need the money really bad and this happens a lot in Mexico too. these people do this becasue they need to feed their children.

Do you think prostitution should be legal? Why or why not?

No. In my own opinion. The women might have a desease, or if you're caught you might be put to jail. And yes, there are many risks. The protitutes might be murdered, raped and or harmed. These prostitutes are taking these risks just to make money and exploit themselves.

I don't believe in prostitution rings, but I believe that prostitution should be legal in itself. Each woman should register themselves and have monthly checkups. It would give the practice a cleaner, safer work.

My main reason for being for it is that it gives poor woman (and men) a way to feed themselves. It's dangerous, but anyone getting into the practice is well aware of this.

Beautiful Mistake:
why would people pay for sex, it's called a girlfriend/boyfriend.

I think you're forgetting the fact that not everyone has a girlfriend/boyfriend.
And people act like it's so simple to just 'get a regular job.'
But most of the people suggesting that probably haven't even tried.

I think that if its your only way of making money then go for it, but I think that while being a prostitute you should at least try to find a better job, and If you cant then so be it. I acutally think that if a women is doing it for the right reasons (need to feed family or something like that) then I see it as very respectable thing to do, I mean, I cant even imagine having to swallow my pride like that to put food on the table.

Against. It won't stop child prostitution. It won't stop STD's from being spread. It won't stop violence between the prostitute and the pimps. Pretty much anything someone tells you prostitution can solve is a big fat load of crap.

Legal or not, prostitution is always going to carry a certain brand with it. It has always been a shameful profession, and it always will be, no matter what type of laws or regulations would be created.

But then again, prostitution has always been here. Ever since the ancient Rome, there have been women who sleep with men for money or other goods. What can we do today to change that, to wipe it completely off the radar and live in a happy, prostitution-free world? I say not much, no matter how hard we try.

Although basically it's every woman's own choice what they do with their bodies and who to sleep with, too many criminal activities surround the profession to ever get rid of all of them. Pimps forcing young (often foreign) girls into the scene, promising them a better life they're never going to see. Drugs to numb the emotional pain. STD's, obviously, though there's nothing criminal about them. Legalising prostitution wouldn't wipe them away.
