well i use this book called "Bass Method Book 1 (or 2 or 3)" by Ed Friedland.

I like it a lot. it's published by Hal LEonard Corporation or something. It's really good.

I'm trying to learn "My Funny Valentine" to play with some of my class mates. Problem is, I can only practise on a guitar not a bass, which makes it a lot harder when I finally have a bass to practise on (Only when I'm in school)

I really want to learn to play properly and have my own bass - I just can't afford it...

My starter was Washburn. It came in a starter pack. Starter packs are good because you get an amp, guitar bag, picks (if you choose to use them) and a lead. You will need to buy a strap seperately. Ask the people in the store about these little clip things that help the strap stay on the guitar better.
if you are going to get a bass, you should go to a big store (not a small one) and ask a recommendation from the people who work there because they know their stock best. Just don't go for anything too cheap because it'll suck and break all the time but don't go for anything too expensive, because you are beginning.
If the lead breaks, get an expensive one, beginner or not otherwise the leads will break. DieHard leads are the best.

Yes
It's so simple.
A three year old could play it.

I don't see why people say that Mikey Way is their bassist hero when everything he plays is

There's nothing really special about that.

Couldn't agree more ^_^

follow me by the rocket boys has an awesome bass line perfect for beginners, and it's not boring either, it actualy sound good on it's own.

Yeah. I started by learning Give 'em hell kid........ Cause I love the bass in the beginning. But, yeah. It's good for beginners. (Tenically I'm still a beginner so what am I talking about, I only started 2 years ago)

Can you guys tell me how you all fret on the bass?

If you are going from fret 3 on the A String to fret 5 on the A string, do you:-

A. Fret 3rd with your first finger, then let go and move to 5th with your 3rd finger

or

B. Fret 3rd with your first finger and when you go to 5th, keep holding 3rd, and fret 4th and 5th

?

because I have has a little bit of trouble with my bass teacher (he is being a complete ass) and he says that bassists do it way B even though everyone I know who plays bass and my old bass teacher does it way A

Thanks

I do it way A. And I get slated for it. If you see my youtube videos, quite a few people like to diss my technique.
Many people say that "B" is the "proper" way to do it, and that people who do "A" are plebians.

I use my fingers because:
1) I taught myself that way (having no pick around)
2)More Control
3)Because it's ME plucking the strings and making the music, not some pick. That's one of the things i love about basses before guitars.
