I think its up to people what they want to do with theryre life , but ive seen what it can do and how scary the effects can be. What do you think is the cause for so many teens to do so? | yoey962 Bleeding on the Floor  Age: 33 Gender: Female Posts: 1262 | there is alot of protests against underage drinking here. i feel obliged to defend it so i don't feel like i am totally outnumbered. i see no reason why kids hould not be able to drink. when i say kids i mean those responsible young people who know what they are doing. and even if they are not i think everyone needs to get drunk at least once in their life so as to see what it feels like. surely it is better to do that when you are younger and with friends and you have a limited supply (because it is sneaked out of the cupboard) so you cannot get paralitic and the worst consequence you can look forward to is a headache and a severe telling off from your parents? it is a stage alot of people go through. and if i am honest i enjoy getting drunk with my friends and boyfriend. i find it fun. i never drink till i am completely wasted, i just enjoy myself. and i genuinly like the taste of alcohol aswell. and i am certainly not going to let anyone make me feel bad about that because that is the way my life is and i enjoy it. |

I don't drink, but I don't see why the drinking age shouldn't be lowered to 18 like in the UK / Ireland (I don't know about other countries, but I believe quite a few of them have similar age limits). Of course there's still going to be underage drinking going on, but if an eighteen year-old is mature enough to vote, have their full license (you only get your full license in NJ when your 18; I know it's younger other places), sign contracts, and join the military, then they are certainly old enough to have a beer at a bar. Also I think lowering the drinking age would lessen thinks like alcohol poisoning and drunk driving. For the most part (with your average suburban teens), drinking in high school is with fairly limited quantities of alcohol and around friends (not to mention adults; you can't get too drunk or your parents would find out). In college (after a person's eighteen), alcohol is much more widely available and parents aren't around to hear you stumble home. But because they can't legally buy drinks at a club/bar, a lot of kids will binge drink in their dorms before heading out, and end up in unfortunate situations. |

As long as no one is driving or publicly intoxicated, I think it's fine. A big reason is escapism, but its the same reason many adults drink. Alcohol is used as an escape for ALMOST every drinker. I don't think the government should do anything to reduce the amount of people drinking. They should just provide better services and security to prevent drinking and driving. There was a statement in the local newspaper a while back said: '1 in 5 people between 11 and 16 go out and drink over the weekend! This was a newspaper and England.
