We always do songs I want to learn
but if they're too hard, my teacher like, waters them down for me, lol.

I'm really bad at reading notes. I can only read and play at the same time if it's in tab form
so that's something elst I have to work on.

My teacher (who is actually one of my friends. Still makes me pay him though..) hates the music I listen to. xD
So we're trying to find common ground.

I only read tabs.
I'd love to be able to read bass notes.
I can read piano grand.

Lately though, I've had no motivation to pick up the bass..
It sucks. :[

Hysteria.:
^ Me too!
I'm yet to name him.
It's an Ibanez.
Question: Is it better to get lessons or learn by yourself?
I guess it could be really obvious, but I just want other people's opinions XD.

I would recommend getting lessons, but don't just go to the first place you see that offers bass lessons. Look around at some different places and make sure to have a list of questions to ask the teachers. Until you find that one perfect bass teacher, the internet is a great place to start looking up some info. I was self-taught for the first year that I played bass and I'm a pretty good player, if I do say so myself. Purchase a few books, learn to read tabs and music notes ( I very very very very very very very very strongly recommend this - its not hard at all. They're both quiet easy to learn and it helps so much) and sign up to a bass forum on the net where you can ask questions to people who've been playing most of their lives.
I'm sorry if I sound pushy or whatever.

By the way, congatulations, I hope you like playing bass.

Sorry that this is so long but I have to mention, MCR bass lines are possibly the most boring in existence. They're very repetitive and, contary to popular belief, rock bass lines can be pretty funky. Also, broaden your horizons musically because there are genres out there that I probably wouldn't listen to if I wasn't a bassist. Try listening to some funk, blues, jazz, ect. even if its not your normal genres.

^ Yeah, they are pretty easy. xD The first song I learned on bass was I'm Not Okay
and then I learned Welcome To The Black Parade within a few more weeks of that.
I was really suprised at how easy My Chem's bass lines are, but I still enjoy playing them. ^^

I think The Matches have pretty good bass lines. They're in the rock genre, but I'm just putting it out there haha.
Though I have to play watered down versions of their songs because the bassist is really good. xD

I've got lessons now.
My teacher's awesome ^^. Learning tabs, notes, and scales (which I actually quite like to do Tehe ).
I've done Green Day, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and The Darkness so far xD.

Yeah, MCR bass lines sound very.. simple? I dunno XD. No offence to Mikey or anything D:.

I'd love to do some Avenged bass : D.

Lessons.

Seriously, if you're considering taking it up, get a few lessons at least.

I tried to teach myself for a month or two, thought I was doing great!
Turned out I wasn't even picking the strings right. ><

I taught myself.
Or, am teaching myself, rather, since I've only been at it since January.
I watched a video on bass basics a few weeks ago to make sure I was plucking the strings right and all that jazz, and learned that I do everything as it's supposed to be done.
I guess lessons are a good idea if you have no clue what you're doing, but I'm doing just fine without them.
Granted, I play mostly easy stuff, like Nirvana and the easier Led Zeppelin stuff, but I'm not very experienced.
My favorite song to play is "How Many More Times" by Led Zeppelin. It's easy and very catchy.
